Tom Cruise Jumping on Oprah's Couch

June 2024 · 8 minute read

"He's in the building!..."

Forget all those other videos. Do't even bother with them. THIS is the gold standard in batshit crazy. THIS is the moment Cruise destroyed his own career and every shred of his credibility.

The drooling, hyper, overexcited frau audience. Oprah literally shitting her pants. Cruise manically and insanely performing acrobatics like a Scientologist cult member who had fucked Xenu on a 9 day meth binge and who wasn't done yet.

Trigger warning: This version is edited down to 4.29 and is difficult to watch.

Imagine how Nicole Kidman felt when she watched it.

[quote] THIS is the moment Cruise destroyed his own career and every shred of his credibility This was in 2005, and he destroyed nothing. Yeah he made some stinkers, but his career has been fine. However I'm sure he sends his love.

Give up R1/R2 clam.

He destroyed his entire credibility, likability and career on the Oprah show. He is no longer tolerated in Hollywood and he bankrolls his own movies.

by Anonymousreply 4May 29, 2021 10:01 AM

I’d prefer to say Cruise literally “Jumped the Couch”

by Anonymousreply 5May 29, 2021 10:44 AM

I think I can guess Nicole's reaction...

by Anonymousreply 6May 29, 2021 10:59 AM

It's typical heterosexual behavior.

by Anonymousreply 7May 29, 2021 11:12 AM

No it isn't R7! Very few people on the planet are that insane.

by Anonymousreply 8May 29, 2021 11:22 AM

Hadn't Nicole moved onto the next beard by then?

by Anonymousreply 9May 29, 2021 11:26 AM

No one will ever find out Kidman's true reaction because her face had already been frozen by then and the plastic bitch hasn't been able to move a single facial muscle since 1998.

by Anonymousreply 10May 29, 2021 11:51 AM

I just cringe when I think of how he said, “I’m in love”.

What a simp.

by Anonymousreply 11May 29, 2021 1:03 PM

Dame Edna said that as a statuesque woman she was able to give Nicole a shoulder to cry on during her divorce from Tom as it was more than "little Tom" could do because he would have had to stand on a box.

I have never understood how he became such a popular celebrity/star. His arrogant, self absorbed douche personality is always on display. There isn’t a sincere bone in his body. Fake to the max.

by Anonymousreply 13May 29, 2021 1:17 PM

I'll tell you how. He was just lucky. He lucked up on the right role long ago and got some good reviews and the studios decided maybe he was worth taking a chance on and they did. They built him up into something he never was and never will be and the viewing public bought it hook line and sinker. Luckily for him he was already a big star before most people saw that he was a crazy cult member and that's probably the only thing that saved him. Also he's been very smart about staying away from the pap's cameras. You never see him in sketchy situations or acting like a fool when he's off set. He keeps himself to himself. People get sick of an actor when they see them looking foolish too much.

But honestly, Tom's coming to the end days of his big time career. His looks are going and there's only so much the plastic surgeons can do for him. He's close to being a dwarf. I predict some day relatively soon he'll get out of acting and maybe go into producing in order to keep the big bucks coming in. Gotta keep Davey's coffers full after all.

I said it at the time and still think it. I really don't think this was bad at all. But I do think the reaction to it has been really over the top.

by Anonymousreply 15May 29, 2021 4:50 PM

By 2005 people forgot what cocaine looks like

by Anonymousreply 16May 29, 2021 4:57 PM

To be fair to the audience aren't they given queues to clap, scream and cheer? I think the audience was actually shocked too once he started the crazy behavior.

by Anonymousreply 17May 29, 2021 5:02 PM

There was never a thread on this? Not that I care, it's always worth talking about. Has scientology been mentioned yet, in how he got where he got in his career? I'm not even one to automatically think everything in Hollywood ihappens for unwholesome, evil reasons. But it seems like a fear-based system, now, no longer even remotely talent-based. So I don't believe he has some kind of massive popularity. I NEVER hear anyone say they like him, or his movies. It's not like the days everyone really seemed to like Redford, or Newman. Or going back further, Gary Cooper, let's say.

by Anonymousreply 18May 29, 2021 5:33 PM

He's so handsome! I wish he'd jump on my couch!

by Anonymousreply 19May 29, 2021 5:35 PM

Oh the hyper heterosexuality of it all.

by Anonymousreply 20May 29, 2021 5:35 PM

"Oh, Oprah, I'm so in love with ol' Whatserface! I can't stop talking about her, I'm so excited!"

by Anonymousreply 21May 29, 2021 5:40 PM

He was just a simple man in love OP why couldn't you be happy for him?

by Anonymousreply 22May 29, 2021 5:40 PM

Now he is just reduced to doing "Mission Impossible" movies for China and European audiences. Imagine hanging out of an airplane for a stunt for no good reason but your ego and absolutely no one cared. It could have all been CGI and looked exactly the same.

It didn't end his career--he still continues to make the Mission: Impossible movies, which are quite profitable. But it did end his being taken seriously anymore as the biggest star in Hollywood, which he had been for nearly two decades, and it seriously hurt his reputatioon--studios began to view him as unstable. Then at about the same time he seriously pissed off Steven spielberg in a very public way for being sexist about Kate Capshaw ("You need to control your wife, Steven"), and that was that.

What hurt him the most was that his movie persona had been one of deep sincerity: how many times had he played the handsome frat boy type who has to learn what really matters in life and then be sincere about it at the end? But the Oprah thing was disastrous because it was so transparently for publicity: he didn't talk at all about Katie Holmes (which he would have done had he really been as in love with her as he was pretending), but only about his feelings.

And then when he went on "Today" he seemed to be throwing poor Brooke Shields under the bus to make his point about psychotherapy, and even a child could see that the angry "You're being glib, Matt" remark was just projection.

He never became radioactive the way Kevin Spacey and James Franco have, but it did pull him off his pedestal in our culture, which was a fall well deserved.

by Anonymousreply 24May 29, 2021 5:50 PM

R23, reduced to doing Mission: Impossible? Do you realize how much money those movies make? The proof is like there’s 23 of them.

by Anonymousreply 25May 29, 2021 5:59 PM

R24 sums it up well. He was crucified for that couch jumping and it all was just too cringey and desperate. I never heard about the Spielberg thing, but it’s funny.

by Anonymousreply 26May 29, 2021 6:11 PM

He's nearly 60, so he's pretty much at the end of his long M:I run.

Soon he will be a guest on whatever the equivalents are today of The Love Boat and Murder, She Wrote,.

by Anonymousreply 28May 29, 2021 6:22 PM

He’s always been cheesy.

I was a very clueless kid growing up in one of the most awful rural areas in the US.

But I knew enough to never, ever, ever be attracted to Tom Cruise, even in the 80s.

by Anonymousreply 29May 29, 2021 6:31 PM

[quote] It's typical heterosexual behavior.

Actually, this couch episode was when I started thinking he was gay. As in, look, everybody! I'm going to marry a young woman! I'm straight as can be!

by Anonymousreply 30May 29, 2021 7:48 PM

I always preferred Tom over Pitt
