He went on to claim hard-fought scalps over fast-rising Milos Raonic and Feliciano López to spread the semifinals for the first time in his tennis career in 2011.

In the 2nd round of the Rogers Cup 2011, he stunned world No. 2 Rafael Nadal, 1–6, 7–6, 7–6 afterward recovering from a 1–6, 1–3 scarcity before losing to Janko Tipsarević.
