Eastern freeway crash: Road worker killed after crash in Clifton Hill

A traffic controller has died after allegedly being struck by a car on an inner-city Melbourne freeway.

Emergency services were called to the scene of a crash on the Eastern Freeway, near Hoddle St, in Clifton Hill just after midnight on Wednesday.

It is understood a man was undertaking night roadworks on the freeway when he was allegedly struck by a Toyota sedan.

He was taken to hospital but died shortly after.

The 27-year-old sedan driver has been arrested and is currently assisting police with their inquiries.

The Eastern Freeway outbound remains closed at Hoddle Street as of 7am.

It is expected to be closed for some time while investigators process the scene.

All outbound traffic on Alexandra Pde is being diverted via Wellington St to Queens Pde and Heidelberg Rd to the Chandler Highway.

All northbound traffic on Hoddle St can continue to Heidelberg Rd.

Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time and follow directions issued by emergency crews on-site.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
