Daisy Frye Reed Metropolitan Funeral

Dr. Daisy Virginia Frye Reed was born on August 7, 1935, in Washington DC  from the union of  James Frye, Jr and Alberta Edwards. She was the eldest of four children: Robert Frye, Sr, Charles Frye, and Geraldine Frye King. Daisy was raised in Mount Olive Baptist church in Northeast DC, where her mother was a very active participant  (Mother of the Church). She attended DC public schools and graduated from Dunbar High Sschool, with honors.  In 1953, at the age of 17, she started her journey in education, as a freshman at Miner Teachers College. Her goal and dream was to become an elementary school teacher.  Later, Miner Teachers College was combined with DC Teachers College.  Today, DC Teachers College is known as the University of the District of Columbia. She graduated with honors, obtaining her bachelors in education, in only 3 years. She was the first in our family to graduate from college. While there, she also joined Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated. She enjoyed the unity and community service she shared with her sorors  Her mission was to give back and improve the educational system in which she came from.  In 1956, she graduated with a BS in Elementary Education. Shortly after graduation,  her first assignment was as an elementary school teacher at  Gage Elementary School in Northeast.  After teaching there for 2 yrs, Daisy married with James Spencer Reed Sr on August 8, 1958.  She was married in the catholic church because her new husband was Catholic.   From the union 2 children were born: James Spencer Reed Jr. and Kristel Millicent Reed.  Soon after the honeymoon she was transferred from Gage Elementary to Lewis Elementary. She spent 2 more years teaching at Lewis Elementary.  Daisy then accepted a promotion/raise and the opportunity to teach 4th and 5th grades at Truesdell Elementary School in NW DC; Daisy taught about 8 more years there. During that time, the family moved from 1505 41st SE Washington DC to 2611 33rd St SE Washington DC. After enduring marital complications and her unwavering resolve to be at the top of the educational field, she moved with 4yo Kristel to New York and enrolled in Columbia University. She loved being in graduate school and  the excitement of living in New York City. Aunt Ella Mae, who lived in Elizabeth NJ, was her rock and primary family support during this time. In June 1975, Daisy Reed defended her dissertation. That following October, she was awarded a Doctor of Education degree (Ed. D.). There was a huge family celebration in honor of her accomplishment. Not only was she the first in her family to graduate from college, but also the first to have the title Doctor before her name! Her first job as Dr. Daisy Reed was there at Columbia University. Shortly afterward in 1976, she accepted a position as an Assistant Professor of Education with Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Daisy and Kristel moved from New York to Richmond, VA. In 1977, she was reunited with her son, who started his freshman year at the University of Richmond playing football. In 1978, Daisy and James decided to reconcile and buy a bigger house together in Richmond VA. The whole family became members of Holy Rosary Church.  The marriage lasted another 11 years, until Daisy decided to divorce James. During that 11 year period, James Jr, graduated college, was commissioned as a US Army Officer, was married and had children. Kristel graduated high school, graduated from the University of Virginia, and started her own career. Daisy and James, Sr. were married for 30 years. Single life suited her  as her career continued to flourish. Dr. Reed was an accomplished writer, co-authoring several books, authoring many professional papers, articles and handbooks.  Dr. Daisy F. Reed taught at VCU for 25 years and retired in 2000.  During her professional educational tenure, in addition to her Doctor of Education degree, she obtained three masters degrees: โ€“ Master of Arts Degree, Elementary Education.  George Washington University 1961 โ€“ Master of Education Degree, Curriculum and Supervision.  Teachers College Columbia University 1974 โ€“ Master of Religious Education Degree, Adult Education.  Loyola University 1994 Dr. Reed loved to read books, and loved to travel. Her overseas travel included: Guam, Japan, South Korea, Mexico and South Africa.  She loved the Caribbean. Her travels included:  St Thomas, The Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico.  The states and cities she visited within the US  are too many to name. In 2014, Dr. Reed moved from Richmond VA, to Suffolk VA to be closer to her children, grandchildren, and nephew. She met and enjoyed numerous new friends and acquaintances in the Tidewater area. She was particularly fond of and had a lot of respect for the friends and caregivers she met at Harmony Suffolk VA, (8 years) and Karolwood Gardens, Portsmouth VA. Dr. Daisy Reed is survived by her two children: James Reed Jr. and Kristel Reed Bates. 5 Grandchildren: Jamesa Bitting, Sheree Reed Edwards, Deidra Reed, Jasmyn Reed, and Anthony Bates, III. 5 Great Grandchildren: Justyce Bitting, Chancellor Bitting, Camden Garth, Calie Edwards, and  Cayla Edwards. A brother: Robert Frye Sr. Numerous Nieces and Nephews and cousins including: Robert Frye, Jr. Odeyo James Frye, Amanda Frye, Sekou Frye, Anthony Frye, Lia Frye, and Elisha King.
